5/9/2023 0 Comments Othercide enemiesThe real meat of the game is in the missions which are a turn-based grid affair, and are oh so enjoyable to play! Characters have a set of action points (AP), usually 100, used for moving and attacking. Combat uses a grid, as many games of this type do, with some genuinely well designed monsters to fight. You can also resurrect lost Daughters here if you have a rare resource that allows you to do so. Whilst your Daughters initially fall into three classes, you can specialise them by picking skills every few levels, making each one somewhat unique. The overworld is fairly simplistic compared to some of Othercide’s peers, with you leveling up your Daughters, creating new ones, and selecting which mission to undertake. Gameplay takes place in two parts, as games of this type often do, with an overworld in which you develop your team and plan for your next mission, and the tactical layer in which you take on your foes. These themes aren’t explicit, as a lot of the story is hidden away in codex entries, but they’re clear enough if you’re paying attention. On its base level, the plot is very simplistic, but it does go into some pretty dark places, including child and sexual abuse, so do be aware if this is something that’s a difficult subject for you. Othercide is a turn-based tactical game in which you, as the Red Mother, lead your team of Daughters to defeat The Other who seeks to destroy the Veil connecting reality and unreality. Its combat has more in common with the likes of Fire Emblem than XCOM, but I’m very interested nonetheless. Othercide grabbed my attention thanks to using that gameplay style alongside a gorgeous art style and rogue-lite gameplay structure. The likes of Alder’s Blood, Phantom Doctrine, and Narcos: Rise of the Cartels are flawed but enjoyable additions to any fan’s game selection, but I’m always after something else to scratch that turn-based combat itch. Be sure to not have one of your Daughters killing too many enemies, or your remaining Daughters will have to fight alone to reach Penance! Meanwhile, the changes to which maps can appear should keep each mission feeling varied and interesting throughout a campaign, adding even more replayability. As a self-confessed lifelong XCOM obsessive, anything with that tile-based tactical combat crossed with an overworld strategic layer immediately grabs my attention. However, rather than blindly fighting their way out of it, each daughter must slay a specific number of foes to fill their Penance gauge and leave the battlefield. In it, swarms of enemies approach and will inevitably attack your daughters. ![]() Penance is a brand new type of mission that forces a balanced offensive and defensive playstyle. Othercide has a brand new mode for you to play, courtesy of Focus Home Interactive. You can take on the new mode right now after you update the game and find it in the menu. ![]() However, instead of just taking them out all by your lonesome, your daughters must each take out a certain number of enemies in order to win. ![]() This mode will put you right into the middle of the action as you will be dealing with swarms of enemies coming at you from all sides. Well, now the developers at Lightbulb Crew have a new mode for you to tackle as players can now jump into Penance. The lead-up to it was impressive as the company marketed this as the next great game that would be taking over 2020, and it received favorable reviews along the way, but there hasn't been a ton of talk for the game after it dropped in late July. It's rather interesting that ever since the game was released we haven't heard a ton about it or what's been going on with it since. Focus Home Interactive has released a new update for Othercide this week, giving players a brand new mode to play.
